If you want to pass your driving test this year without spending months on one lesson a week, an intensive or semi-intensive course is the quickest route. Both squeeze your lessons into weeks rather than months, so you remember what you learned last time, build momentum and get test-ready far sooner. But they suit different people. This guide explains how each one works, what it costs at SAMZ Automatic Driving School in Edinburgh and the Lothians, and how to choose the right one for you.
Why learning faster helps you pass
With weekly lessons, a lot of each session goes on remembering what you did seven days ago. When lessons are close together, skills like reading roundabouts, judging gaps at junctions and planning ahead stick much faster. DVSA says learners need around 45 hours of lessons plus 22 hours of private practice on average (see GOV.UK: practising with family or friends). Spread across one lesson a week, that can take most of a year. Packed into a focused course, it can take a few weeks.
Learning in an automatic car speeds things up again. With no clutch, no gears and no stalling, you spend your lesson time on the road skills the examiner is actually looking at.
What is an intensive driving course?
An intensive driving course means lessons every day, usually for 1 to 3 weeks. It’s the fastest way to go from your first lesson to test standard, and it works best when you can clear your diary.
An intensive course is right for you if:
- You have a deadline, such as a new job, a move or university.
- You can take a week or two off work, school or college.
- You’ve already passed your theory test, or you’re booking it now.
- You learn best by doing something every day until it clicks.
Intensive course prices (Edinburgh and the Lothians)
| Course | Price | Per hour | Typically completed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 hours | £600 | £60 | Within 1 week |
| 20 hours (most popular) | £1,160 | £58 | Within 1 week |
| 30 hours | £1,680 | £56 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| 40 hours | £2,160 | £54 | 2 to 3 weeks |
We also offer 15, 25 and 35-hour intensive courses. See every option on our intensive driving courses page.
What is a semi-intensive driving course?
A semi-intensive driving course gives you 2 to 3 lessons a week, usually over 2 to 8 weeks. You still get the momentum of regular lessons, but with time in between to rest, practise and absorb what you’ve learned. It’s also slightly cheaper per hour.
A semi-intensive course is right for you if:
- You want to pass soon but can’t take a full week off.
- You’re fitting lessons around work, school, college or family.
- You feel a bit nervous and would rather not drive every single day.
- You’re waiting for a test date a few weeks away and want to peak at the right time.

How many hours will I need?
It depends on where you’re starting from. As a rough guide:
- Complete beginner: 30 to 40 hours.
- Some lessons before, or some private practice: 20 to 30 hours.
- Nearly test-ready, or switching from manual to automatic: 10 to 20 hours.
Not sure? Our free course recommender asks 7 quick questions about your experience, timescale and confidence, then suggests the right course and number of hours for you.
Get your theory test and practical test sorted early
The biggest thing that slows down a fast-track course is the test itself, not the lessons. Here’s how to stay ahead:
- Pass your theory test first. You can’t book your practical until you have. It costs £23; book it on GOV.UK. Your pass certificate lasts 2 years.
- Book your practical test yourself. Since April 2026 only the learner can book and manage their own test on the official GOV.UK booking service. A weekday test costs £62, and evenings, weekends and bank holidays cost £75 (see driving test costs).
- Choose your test centre carefully. You can only change your booking a limited number of times, and moves are restricted to nearby centres (check the rules on GOV.UK). Read our guide to Edinburgh test centres: Musselburgh or Currie to help you decide.
- Tell us your test date. We’ll plan your course so your final lessons and mock tests land just before the big day.
Want to know what happens on the day? GOV.UK explains what happens during the driving test, and our driving lesson FAQs answer the questions our learners ask most.

Our recommendation
If you have a deadline and can take time off, choose an intensive course. Our 20-hour intensive is the most popular choice for learners with some experience. If you want to pass in the next few weeks but have work, study or family to fit around, choose a semi-intensive course. It costs less per hour, it’s easier on your schedule, and most learners find the pace just right.
Either way, you’ll learn in a modern automatic car with one patient instructor who knows exactly where you’re up to.
