If you’re learning to drive in Edinburgh, you’ll usually sit your test at one of two centres: Edinburgh (Musselburgh) to the east or Edinburgh (Currie) to the south-west. They feel quite different, and the latest DVSA test centre data shows it: in 2024-25, Musselburgh passed 47.0% of car tests and Currie 43.2%, both below the UK average of 48.7%.

That doesn’t mean Edinburgh is impossible. It just means good, local preparation matters more here, and learning in an automatic helps a lot in city traffic.

Musselburgh test centre

Musselburgh suits learners in east Edinburgh, Portobello, Joppa and East Lothian. Routes tend to mix town streets, coastal roads, roundabouts and faster A-roads. Busy high streets and pedestrian crossings need patience and good observation.

Currie test centre

Currie covers south-west Edinburgh, including Balerno, Juniper Green, Wester Hailes and Colinton. Routes can include busy main roads such as Lanark Road, fast sections near the city bypass and dense residential streets. It’s a demanding mix, which partly explains its lower pass rate.

How to choose

  • Test near where you learn: knowing the area reduces nerves and surprises.
  • Take the earliest suitable date: waits have been long across Edinburgh, so flexibility helps.
  • Consider Livingston: some west Edinburgh learners choose Livingston, which passed 50.7% in 2024-25. Just make sure you’ve practised its roads first.

Why automatic makes Edinburgh easier

Stop-start traffic, bus lanes, cobbles, trams, hills and constant junctions are hard work in a manual car. In an automatic there’s no clutch control, no stalling in queues and no hill-start stress. You can focus on the things that cause most faults: observation, mirrors, road positioning and responding to hazards. Brush up on bus lane and tram rules in the Highway Code too.

Your step-by-step plan

  1. Apply for your provisional driving licence.
  2. Pass your theory test.
  3. Take structured automatic lessons, including mock tests on your chosen centre’s typical roads.
  4. Book your practical test on GOV.UK when your instructor says you’re ready, and practise the DVSA “show me, tell me” questions.

Automatic Driving Lessons in Edinburgh: FAQs

How many lessons will I need?

It depends on you. DVSA has suggested learners need around 45 hours of professional lessons plus around 22 hours of private practice on average. Many learners need fewer in an automatic because there’s no clutch or gears to master. Your SAMZ instructor will give you an honest estimate after your first lesson.

Which test centre will I use from Edinburgh?

Most learners from Edinburgh test at Musselburgh or Currie. Your instructor can help you choose based on availability and where you feel most confident.

Can I drive a manual car if I pass in an automatic?

No. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence. If you later want to drive manual cars, you can take a manual test at any time.

Do you pick up from home in Edinburgh?

Yes. We can collect you from home, work, school or college in Edinburgh and the surrounding area, so lessons fit around your day.
