If you live in Livingston, you’re lucky: the town’s own test centre has one of the best pass rates in the Lothians. In the latest DVSA test centre data for 2024-25, Livingston passed 50.7% of car tests, above the UK average of 48.7% and well ahead of both Edinburgh centres. Learning in an automatic gives you an even better start, because you can put all your attention on the road instead of the clutch.
Why learn automatic in Livingston?
Livingston was built as a new town, so much of the driving is wide distributor roads, dual carriageways and lots of roundabouts. That’s ideal for an automatic: no stalling on a busy roundabout approach, no hill-start nerves, and more mental space for mirrors, signals and lane discipline. Most learners with SAMZ need fewer lessons than they would in a manual, which saves time and money.
What to expect at Livingston test centre
Your test lasts about 40 minutes and covers:
- An eyesight check (reading a number plate from 20 metres)
- Two vehicle safety questions from the DVSA “show me, tell me” questions
- Around 20 minutes of independent driving, following a sat nav or road signs
- One reversing manoeuvre, such as parallel parking or bay parking
- Possibly an emergency stop
Routes around Livingston usually include a mix of roundabouts, dual carriageway, residential streets and town-centre traffic. Our instructors know the area well and build those situations into your lessons, so nothing on test day comes as a surprise.
Local skills worth practising
- Multi-lane roundabouts: choosing the right lane early and signalling off correctly.
- Dual carriageways: joining at the right speed, overtaking safely and keeping a safe gap.
- Residential estates: narrow streets, parked cars and spotting hazards like children and cyclists.
- Retail park car parks: great for practising bay parking before your test.
Getting test-ready: step by step
- Apply for your provisional driving licence (you can start at 16 for the licence, and drive from 17).
- Study the Highway Code and pass your theory test.
- Take structured automatic lessons that cover every part of the test.
- When your instructor says you’re ready, book your practical test on GOV.UK. Wait times have been several months, so many learners book early and keep training.
One thing to know: if you pass in an automatic, your licence lets you drive automatic cars only. For most drivers today, especially as more cars go hybrid and electric, that’s no drawback at all.
