SAMZ Automatic Driving School is based in Broxburn, at East Mains Industrial Estate, so we know the local roads well. Whether you’re in Broxburn, Uphall, Dechmont, Winchburgh or Kirkliston, our automatic lessons can start from your front door.
Where do Broxburn learners take their test?
Most Broxburn learners take their practical test at Livingston, which is close by and has one of the best pass rates in the Lothians: 50.7% in 2024-25 according to DVSA test centre data, above the UK average of 48.7%. Some learners nearer Edinburgh choose Currie instead. Your instructor will help you pick the centre that suits you.
Why automatic lessons make sense in Broxburn
Broxburn’s main street can be busy, and you’re never far from fast roads linking to the M8, M9 and Edinburgh. In an automatic you don’t need to think about gears or clutch control. That makes it easier to deal with queuing traffic, junctions onto main roads and joining faster roads, and most learners progress more quickly.
Local driving our learners practise
- Main Street and the town centre: parked cars, crossings, buses and junctions.
- Residential estates: narrow streets, give-way situations and reversing manoeuvres.
- Rural roads: bends, national speed limits and farm traffic around the surrounding villages.
- Livingston test routes: roundabouts and dual carriageways, practised before test day.
What the driving test involves
The test lasts about 40 minutes. It includes an eyesight check, two DVSA “show me, tell me” questions, around 20 minutes of independent driving, one reversing manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop. Our lessons cover every part, including mock tests in test conditions.
How to get started
- Apply for your provisional driving licence.
- Read the Highway Code and pass your theory test.
- Book automatic lessons with SAMZ. Lessons are flexible, including evenings and weekends where available.
- Book your practical test on GOV.UK once you’re ready. Booking early helps, as waits can be long.
Automatic Driving Lessons in Broxburn: FAQs
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on you. DVSA has suggested learners need around 45 hours of professional lessons plus around 22 hours of private practice on average. Many learners need fewer in an automatic because there’s no clutch or gears to master. Your SAMZ instructor will give you an honest estimate after your first lesson.
Which test centre will I use from Broxburn?
Most learners from Broxburn test at Livingston (or Currie). Your instructor can help you choose based on availability and where you feel most confident.
Can I drive a manual car if I pass in an automatic?
No. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence. If you later want to drive manual cars, you can take a manual test at any time.
Do you pick up from home in Broxburn?
Yes. We can collect you from home, work, school or college in Broxburn and the surrounding area, so lessons fit around your day.
